Moodle: A Free Open Source Learning Platform

With COVID-19 causing a lock-down all over the world, a lot of schools and universities had to move their classes online. While some institutions already had learning management systems in place a lot of others weren’t ready and had to find quick solutions including Whatsapp groups and zoom calls.

Without any confirmed cure or vaccine for COVID-19 a big transformation is expected to happen in education. Schools will rely more on e-learning platforms and reduce the physical presence in their premises. To manage their classes efficiently, instructors need a Learning Management System that gives them control and flexibility.

If you are looking for an e-learning platform for your institution you will find many paid and free solutions that cater to different needs. I personally recommend Moodle: an open-source platform with a lot of features, a lot of available modules and a big community of users who are ready to support you if you face any issues.

My first experience with moodle was in 2006. As part of my final year project at the university I got the chance to implement moodle for the institution. My tasks included setting up the server, installing moodle, developing additional modules and administering and maintaining the platform for a period of 1 year.

In the past 3 years I implemented and maintained moodle for 2 other universities. My tasks included setting up the environment, implementing and customizing the platform, developing migration and integration scripts with other systems and maintaining the platforms.
